More Reports

Access All Areas say:
U2 CLOSE TO ANNOUNCING MARCH AUSTRALIAN TOUR
It's 99% confirmed ... U2 ARE DEFINATELY COMING TO AUSTRALIA!

Originally, dates were posted on U2's official website to take place in January 2006 but with the addition of US and European dates, that the band are now expected to be doing shows in March at the same time as the Commonwealth Games.

U2- one of the world's biggest rock acts will play two shows at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne next March on the same weekend as the Commonwealth Games' closing ceremony.

U2 will also perform at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and the Sydney Superdome with multiple shows on standby and tickets going on sale before Christmas.

Michael Coppel Presents, the tour promoter behind U2's 1993 tour, is expected to announce the tour dates over the next couple of weeks after a staggering 18 months of negotiations.

The Age newspaper also reported today, that whilst in Australia, U2 lead singer, Bono plans to congratulate Makybe Diva and her trainer after their Melbourne Cup win.

U2 to crash Commonwealth Games?

From The Age:

Achtung, baby! U2 aiming to crash Games finale
By Patrick Donovan and Peter Ker

Thekings of motor sport are idling, laughter is taking a holiday and there will be no new movies. But Irish rock singer Bono plans to crash Melbourne's Commonwealth Games party.

One of the world's biggest music acts, Bono's U2 is expected to play two shows at Telstra Dome next March in front of up to 80,000 fans on the same weekend as the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony.

After 18 months of negotiations, promoter Michael Coppel Presents is expected to announce the two shows for Telstra Dome on March 24 and 25.

If the dates are confirmed, several hundred thousand people can be expected in the city centre for the shows and sold-out Games events at the MCG and Vodafone Arena.

Blue-ribbon Games events such as the men's and women's 4x100 metre running relays, finals in the women's pole vault — likely to feature Australia's Tatiana Grigorieva — and sold-out finals of the netball competition are the pick of Games finals on those days.

The Age believes the rock shows are not of major concern to Melbourne 2006 organisers, who have had strong ticket sales for the nights in question.

But the prospect of adding tens of thousands of concert-goers to Melbourne's public transport system — which is expected to carry 70 per cent of Games patrons — is a headache for the State Government, which is already under fire for its public transport policy.

Adding to the pressure, much of Melbourne, including the Docklands precinct around Telstra Dome, will be mired in traffic restrictions on those dates.

The men's 50-kilometre walk travels through Docklands on the day of the first U2 concert, causing many streets around Telstra Dome to be blocked off between midnight and 3.30pm.

Games chairman Ron Walker played down concerns and denied that Games organisers had tried to get the band to play at the closing ceremony.

Most major events have observed an unwritten rule not to schedule events during the Games, from March 15 to 26. Even movie distributors such as Village Roadshow have opted to not release new films during the Games, despite the period coinciding with school holidays.

As well as sports events, the Games will include a multimillion-dollar program of cultural events throughout the city — including at Docklands.

The Grand Prix and the Comedy Festival are among organisations to have rescheduled around the Commonwealth Games. Plans for Moomba have shifted several times. It will now take place on Monday, March 13.

Rumours of the U2 tour increased after Bono phoned horse trainer Lee Freedman to congratulate him on Makybe Diva's Melbourne Cup win, saying he hoped to meet the mare when he was next in Australia.

Sun Herald Speculates

A small article has appeared in the Sydney Sun Herald today discussing the chances of U2 coming next year.
We were hoping that they'd have some real information but alas, they don't seem to know anymore than we do.
Sadly, the photo of Bono is smaller than the giant sized ego shot of Aussie Idol's Lee.

NZ Tour almost confirmed

Our friends at U2New Zooland have reported:

New Zealand's largest city (and the home of One Tree Hill), Auckland, looks set to host two U2 concerts in March 2006, at Western Springs stadium. The second of the two shows is said to be taking place on Ireland's national day of celebration, St Patrick's Day.

A local U2 fan who attended the two Vertigo Tour concerts in Los Angeles last week has returned to New Zealand and posted the following information on the U2 New Zooland Forums.

"Was chatting to Joe O'Herlihy before one of the shows and his answer to my straight-to-the-point question was... 'We will be playing in Auckland on St Patrick's Day next year'. He said they will be playing Western Springs, and for two nights!"

Although this is still not official, it is consistent with information U2 New Zooland has been getting from various reliable sources over the last 24 hours.

Bono rings Lee Freedman

Lee Freedman speaks to Bono at the cup!
Melbourne Cup winner Lee Freedman spoke to Bono on the phone as he was apparently watching the race.

According to the Daily Telegraph, this occurred because one of U2's tour managers were in Melbourne for the cup. Why would they be? hmmmmm.....

Bono Confirms Tour To a Fan

Wonderful news from Adam on the Australian mailing list who just met Bono in New York...

In my 16 seconds of face time with Bono, I said to him "I came from
Australia to see the shows" He said "thanks" I said "Whats happening
with the Australian tour?" And then he said "looks like its GOING TO
HAPPEN" He could have been just blowing me off, but that's not like
Bono to do that - in my opinion.

Don't give up yet, kiddies!

Not the Best Tour News

"U2 feeling the effects of Vertigo"

By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun

There's been some talk of U2 continuing their Vertigo tour after their last scheduled date on Dec. 19 in Portland.

But U2 guitarist the Edge told The Sun in a Canadian newspaper exclusive at the Air Canada Centre last weekend that nothing's been decided.

"At a certain point, we're going to have to get back and start thinking about the next record," said the 44-year-old guitarist, whose band plays the third of their four sold-out shows tonight at the ACC.

The Edge says he does write on the road but he's not as focused as when he's in one place.

"I do, but for every 10 songs I write there's probably only one that will end up going anywhere," he said.

"To start really getting into the material for the next record, it's going to take a lot of time off the road. There's a couple of things that I've done that I hear (and think), 'That's special, that's going to make the next record,' but I'd still need some time off, I think, to make a great U2 record."

U2, whose latest album is 2004's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, wrap up their four-night-stand at the ACC tomorrow night and head to Chicago.

At their second show on Wednesday night, they were joined by Canadian producer Daniel Lanois on stage.
